Happy endings and Happier beginnings

All’s well that ends well, as they say.

And now twenty years on, the story finally has a new and exciting chapter.

Ladies and gentlemen, please meet my oldest daughter:

Somebody learned how to solder, FOR SCIENCE!!
Somebody learned how to solder, FOR SCIENCE!!

And just to prove that it’s not some weird stalking thing:

She's still taller than I am.
She’s still taller than I am – I’m wearing heeled sandals and she’s not.

My face hurts from all the grinning, and my eyes still sting from all the almost-crying.  I just don’t even have the words to describe yet all the way how surreal and amazing and surreal it was.

So, here’s the actual story: I had the occasion to head up to New York to cover the World Maker Faire for work.  Since we’ve been in touch for a few years, we made the arrangements, talked a bit, and finally met face-to-face on Friday, September 19th.  We cried a bit, we hugged, the world didn’t end.

We also freaked everyone out at least a little because we have the same mannerisms, the same hand gestures, the same attitudes, despite her obviously not having grown up with me.  It was hard not to call her “Lili” sometimes because they sound so much alike, but she was also entirely her own person.

I’m sure there will be much, much more on this later as the rest of it sinks in and I come to terms with all the weird relief and delight and unraveling of old things in my heart, but I just wanted to share with you all – you who have watched this strange tale unfold – that it’s come ’round full circle and will be continuing on into the future.

… crap… I think I got another feel in my eye…
