Pretty Girls Make Graves

Last updated on February 17, 2021

I’m sure this is absolutely not what they were talking about, but it was the phrase/song that was pounding through my head all morning.

Our beloved companion, the Big Dumb Gay Dog, aka “Mystical Wind”, more commonly known as Jake (short for “Jake-a-lope”) was hit by a bus this morning and died.

He was an awesome friend, even if that sometimes manifested as him hiding directly under our feet during thunderstorms. He could always tell when you needed to let off some steam, and he was always the first one to let us know when we had visitors of any capacity. He was the reigning Doggie Belching Contest champion, and could clear a room with a single S.B.D.

He was eight years old.

We got Jake from a fellow in Cheyenne who had been forced to keep the rambunctious Australian Shepherd – Labrador mix in a tiny yard barely big enough for his butt. We discovered very early on that he was extraordinarily “talkative” – he growled and grumfed just like we did, but when there was real and present danger, he would make not a sound. It was pretty impressive. We rescued Jake just before we got our first kitty Rose, so that made him our longest-standing quadraped family member.

He is survived by his homo-honey Crystal; me and Joe; Lili, Miles, and Joseph; Rose, Security, Vicious, Frye, and Chan; and the anorexic-super-model-mini-Dachsund Del. He is preceded through the Veil by Ferocious, Opal, and Toby.

With Crystal leaving on the morrow for the greener pastures of St. Louis, we can rest with absolute certainty that she will be guided and protected by our Retired Harbinger of Death, our beloved Grim, our DammitDogGoLayDownBeforeIStepOnYou. He will now be able to phase through doors and walls without anyone catching him, and he’ll always be able to get into the closet when it rains.

We believe that death is merely a transformation that should be celebrated, at least in part, by those of us left behind. At the same time, there may never be an adequate replacement for our furry stubby-tailed friend, no compensation for the soft fur beneath our feet at the couch, and no trust that can be sown so deep when it came to loving and protecting his family.

The Gods work in mysterious ways, and we are only very small humans in a very big universe trying to understand things beyond the scope of our little minds. Beyond all that, we know the love that is held and felt and shared between Family, and that is our comfort, and that is our sorrow.

Godspeed, Jake. We’ll see you when we get there.

    CRAP!!!

This sucks! I like that damn beast. I only spent that one week with him and could not believe how yummy and sweet and awesome that dog was. It made me feel good knowing he was safely protecting the babies. I know it is waaaaaayyyy early, but when the babies and you guys are ready for a new addition, I would be honored to find one for you all. Of course knowing your life one will find you. I am sorry for your loss …. I know it hurts …. especially for the kids ….. I still miss Zephyr and mist up when I see a big hellasexy black cat. But life does move on and these things really do make us stronger and understand that circle of life process better. Send my love to everyone.
